Shipment preparation considerations
Shipping goods internationally will invoke a number of costs categories:
- VAT (Value-added tax)
- (Export) and import taxes
- Duty and customs fees
- And based on these the import/export handling fees of the shipping agency (UPS, Fedex, etc.)
If not otherwise agreed with the sales contact person (e.g., in case of warranty) any incurring cost (e.g., for shipping, duty, repair, but excluding costs for diagnosis if not explicitly stated) is billed to the customer.
In case of warranty, and if not agreed otherwise, the client organizes and pays the shipment to Imagine Optic (including duty and other importation costs), and Imagine Optic takes care of the cost for shipping the item back to the client.
HS / HTS codes (outside European Union)
The Harmonized System (HS) classification is a 6-digit standard, called a subheading, for classifying globally traded products. HS numbers are used by customs authorities around the world to identify the duty and tax rates for specific types of products.
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code is a 10-digit import classification system that is specific to the United States. HTS codes are administered by the U.S. International Trade Commission. An HTS number takes the same form as an HS code for the first six digits, and then has four differing last digits.
If you don’t know the HS or HTS number of the product(s), please contact Imagine Optic.
HS/HTS codes must be noted in the delivery note and Air waybill in order identify the correct type of goods for customs clearance.
Defective products or used products do not always have the same commercial value as a the point of sale. If you cannot estimate the commercial value of the item you want to return to Imagine Optic, please contact Imagine Optic.
Temporary exports and imports
Shipping items for repair might involve duty fees and taxes when exporting and importing from outside the EU.
Please note that temporary exports are often the most cost-efficient solution, especially for valuable products. This type of shipment avoids extensive customs procedures, eliminating payment of customs duties and excise taxes and eliminating the purchase of temporary import bonds. Please note that this service may not be available from shipment agencies without ATA carnet, commonly known as “Merchandise Passports”.
Unfortunately FEDEX, UPS and some other popular shipment companies DO NOT offer this option! Sometimes they note a client's wish on the parcel and ask what to do (additional delays).
Please note that a temporary import is mostly the most expensive option when FEDEX/UPS leave the parcel at the French customs, and another shipment company licensed to make temporary imports gets involved.
That is why all returns of products need to be discussed and handled case by case!
